Article Review: How Schools Perpetuate Illiteracy
Rosow, La Vergne, (1991). How schools perpetuate illiteracy. Educational Leadership (Sept).
The poor get poorer because parents cannot help their children read pleasure readings at home. Also homework perpetuates this, by assigning the finishing of assignment, of which illiterate are ill equipped to help with. They suggest that homework be enriching rather than an extension of school where at home they don't have access to materials, or correct teaching feedback. In such situations students learn the wrong literacy rules, rather than being reinforced the right ones at home.
